Every week has a purpose.

The SPALLA method organizes your horn practice week by week, with a clear purpose.

  1. MONDAYThe week's purpose: something concrete to learn.
  2. TECHNIQUEExercises to make that sound right.
  3. MUSICReal music that contains it.
  4. APPLICATIONYou use it in a piece, with everything before it.
  5. SUNDAYThe week closes. Another begins tomorrow.

One week. One purpose. One step forward.

Each week has a concrete purpose.

Technique prepares it, music contains it, and you apply it.

What's new rests on what came before.

On Sunday, the week closes. The next one starts from there.

  1. TECHNIQUE
  2. MUSIC
  3. APPLICATION
  1. Week 1D
  2. Week 2+ E
  3. Week 3+ F
  4. Week 4+ G

Illustration with an original Spalla exercise: here, one new note per step. Not the course calendar.

NEW THIS WEEK

  1. New discovery

    E

Right below F, on the first line of the staff. F and E are so close together that they form your first pair of notes.

  2. New discovery

    Pickup

The music starts with one or more notes before the first strong beat. Those notes lead in and push the phrase forward.

  3. New discovery

    Fermata

This symbol over a note asks you to hold it longer than written. The regular pulse pauses for a moment, then the music carries on.

Before you play, SPALLA prepares the musician.

Get ready: a countdown from three to one before you start.
01Get ready
Breathe in: Ignis fills his chest while the count goes down.
02Breathe in
Breathe out: Ignis lets the air go as a golden flame while the count goes down.
03Breathe out
Well done!: the breathing is finished and a Continue button appears.
04Well done!
  1. BREATHE
  2. SING
  3. BLOW
  4. PLAY
  5. TUNE

This is where study begins.

Two phones showing the SPALLA Junior study screen: the header with the tuner and the metronome, the score, and the bottom bar with the record button and the fingerings switch.

  1. Sing: on the first phone, a blue guide bar travels along the score from left to right.
  2. Blow: on the second phone, at the same time, a green guide bar travels along the same score.
  3. Play: the second phone grows to the centre, the fingerings switch on and a red cursor travels along the score to the beat of the metronome.
  4. Tune: the tuner needle finds the centre and the score responds to the sound; the first closed bar lights up orange (out of tune) and the next ones green (in tune).
  5. Excellent: right on the score the word “Excellent” appears and, after it, three stars; the score disappears and only the three stars remain on the dark background.

Stars, rewards and the chest

  1. Three stars shine.
  2. The stars turn into several rewards at once, among them the First great star, the First session, the Glowing metronome, the Music box and the French horn.
  3. Every reward is kept in the chest.

From Ignis's room to your recordings, in three moments.

  1. Ignis, the dragon of SPALLA Junior, sits in his room.
  2. The camera moves through the room until it reaches the piano.
  3. The camera moves in on the sheet music on the piano and My recordings appears: what you have played, as video and as audio, so you can hear your progress.

This is Ignis's room.

Hear
your progress.

  1. A SPALLA Junior screen, in landscape: the greeting “HI, OLIVER!”, the week with the days already studied, today’s Ignis story with its cover and the Play button.
  2. The screen changes story as the days go by: “The echo came back from another tree”, “An ice cave that glows blue” and “Ignis flies in a hot air balloon”.
  3. Each day adds a studied day to the week and brings a new story.

Ignis's stories

There is more to discover.

You don’t practice more. You practice with purpose.
